History
Sumiyoshi Jinja in Shimonoseki is one of the oldest among all Sumiyoshi shrines throughout Japan. This place has prospered since ancient times as a maritime hub, gathering the faith of those praying for safe voyage. It enshrines the three Sumiyoshi deities and has a history of receiving deep devotion particularly as a guardian god of maritime transport. From this location overlooking the Kanmon Strait, many sailors and fishermen have prayed for safe navigation. From within the shrine grounds, one may behold beautiful sea vistas and sense the wishes ancient people offered to the sea god.
