Naminoe Gū

Okinawa Wakasa 1-25-11 Naha

History

Naminoe Gū has been beloved by the people of the islands since the Ryukyu Kingdom era as the chief guardian shrine of Okinawa. Enshrined atop a cliff overlooking the beautiful Naha Harbor, it has gathered the faith of those praying for marine safety and bountiful catches as a sea deity. Despite losing its shrine buildings to war, it achieved a remarkable restoration through the deep faith of the Okinawan people, and now stands as a sacred site visited by many pilgrims from within and outside the prefecture. The vermillion shrine building reflected against the blue sea and sky is truly beautiful enough to deserve the title of Okinawa's spiritual support.
