History
Miyazaki Jingu is a foremost sacred site of Kyushu enshrining Emperor Jinmu, the founder of Japan. Emperor Jinmu, embarking from this land of Hyuga on an eastern expedition to Yamato, was a great personage who established the foundations of Japan as the first emperor. Originally called 'Jinmu Tennō Sha,' it was elevated to the status of an official shrine during the Meiji period and renamed the present 'Miyazaki Jingu.' Throughout the precincts are scattered historic sites connected to Emperor Jinmu, making it a place where one can truly feel the origins of Japan. Every October, the Jinmu Grand Festival is held, featuring a splendid sacred palanquin procession that draws many worshippers.
