Sugimotoji
Kanagawa Kamakura Nikaidou 903
History
Sugimotoji is said to have been founded by the Buddhist priest Gyoki in Tenpyo 6 (734), making it the oldest temple in Kamakura. Enshrining the Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva as its principal deity, it has been cherished as the first station of the Kamakura Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage. The moss-covered stone steps and thatched-roof main hall retain the flavor of ancient Kamakura, and in its serene grounds, visitors can pray with a calm heart.
