History
Heian Jingu was founded in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the transfer of the capital to Heian-kyo, making it a relatively new shrine. It enshrines Emperor Kanmu and Emperor Komei, and is characterized by its grand structures modeled after the Daidairi of Heian-kyo. The vermillion-painted great torii, standing 24 meters high, is one of Kyoto's symbols. The shrine garden is famous for its seasonal beauty, particularly during cherry blossom season when it is crowded with visitors. It also serves as the starting point for the Jidai Matsuri festival and plays an important role in conveying Kyoto's culture and history to the present day.
