History
Tamatushima Jinja is enshrined in Wakaura, a sacred place especially revered by poets. Since the Man'yo era, great poets such as Yamabe no Akahito and Kakinomoto no Hitomaro have cherished this place and composed many celebrated verses here. The enshrined deity is Sotoorihime no Mikoto, a beautiful goddess whose radiance is said to have shone through her garments. The shrine also enshrines Okinagatarashihime no Mikoto (Empress Jingu) and Akohiura no Rei. Since ancient times, this has been deeply revered as the shrine of waka poetry. Along with the scenic beauty of Wakaura, many literature enthusiasts and artists continue to visit today, making it truly a sacred place of culture.
