History
A venerable Hachiman shrine situated on a highland overlooking the city of Hakodate. Founded in Bunka 1 (1804) during the late Edo period, it enshrines Homuda Wakeno Mikoto (Emperor Ojin) as its principal deity. Located at the foot of Hakodate Mountain, it has watched over the development of this port town throughout history. Particularly from the Meiji period onward, when Hakodate flourished as an international trading port, it attracted the faith of many merchants and sailors. Under the divine protection of Hachiman, known for miraculous efficacy in contests and martial fortune, it has supported the lives of Hakodate's people through the ages. The view of Hakodate from within the shrine grounds is also splendid.
