Fudaraku-san-ji
Wakayama Higashi-muro-gun 348 Hamano-miya, Nachi-Katsuura-cho
History
Fudaraku-san-ji, as its name suggests, is an ancient temple born from faith in Fudaraku, the sacred land of Kannon. Since the Heian period, the ultimate practice of Fudaraku ocean crossing has been conducted from this site. Monks would board small vessels and journey forth seeking Fudaraku Pure Land, the idealized realm in the southern seas where Kannon dwells. This ocean crossing was an arduous practice, and many eminent monks departed from here toward the Fudaraku Pure Land. The temple grounds still retain aspects of that era, speaking to the depth of faith. Overlooking the Nachi sea, this site has been revered as a truly sacred departure point.
