Yoyogi Hachimangu

Yoyogi Hachimangu is said to have been founded in 1212 by Arainotonokari Tomomei, a retainer of Minamoto no Yoriie. This shrine, which received its kami from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in Kamakura, long served as a protective deity for the samurai class. During the Edo period, it was cherished as the tutelary shrine of Yoyogi Village, and after the separation of Buddhism and Shinto in the Meiji period, it has continued to be beloved by local residents. Today, even amid Shibuya's urban development, it maintains a tranquil space and has become one of Tokyo's premier power spots where many visitors seek spiritual peace.
