Saikoku Sanjusan-sho Daisan-ban Fusuda Kokuheiji

Kokuheiji is the third station of the Saikoku Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage, and has been cherished by many pilgrims since ancient times as a renowned temple. It is said to have been founded during the Nara period and enshrines Senju Kannon as its principal image. It is particularly famous for the miraculous tales depicted in the "Kokuhe Kannon Engi Emaki" scroll. The story tells of a hunter named Otomo Koji who was guided by Kannon to repent and build a temple hall at this location. The main hall and gardens on the grounds are magnificent, and throughout the seasons they heal the hearts of visitors. Along the long pilgrimage route, many people have touched the compassion of Kannon here.
