Izumo Ooyashiro

Izumo Ooyashiro is among the most ancient shrines recorded in Japan's oldest historical texts. It enshrines Okuninushi no Okami, revered as 'Daikokusama.' According to an extraordinary myth, all the deities of the nation gather here during the Month Without Gods to hold a conference on matchmaking. The main hall, built in the Ooyashiro architectural style standing 24 meters high, is truly magnificent. Some scholars suggest it was once several times taller in ancient times, evoking the romance of antiquity. As the deity of matchmaking, it receives pilgrims without end from across the nation, standing as a symbolic icon of Izumo itself.
