History
Nikkozan Rinno-ji is a distinguished Tendai Buddhist temple opened by the Buddhist monk Shodo during the Nara period. Standing as an ancient temple cradled by the spiritual peaks of Nikko, it boasts a history spanning more than a thousand years. It shares deep ties with Toshogu, where Tokugawa Ieyasu rests, and received generous patronage from the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period. The Sanbut-su-do (Three Buddha Hall) enshrines three Buddhist statues—Amida Nyorai, Senju Kannon, and Batoh Kannon—revered as the original manifestations of the three sacred peaks of Nikko. Through the changing beauty of the seasons, this spiritually potent sacred place continues to soothe the hearts of countless worshippers.
