History

Ankokuji is one of the Ankokuji temples built nationwide by Ashikaga Takauji during the Muromachi period, boasting a long history as the Ankokuji of Hida Province. This temple, built to wish for national peace and the well-being of the people, flourished as the center of Buddhist culture in the Hida region. Numerous ancient Buddhist statues and cultural treasures remain within the grounds, and in particular, the principal image of Yakushi Nyorai draws the faith of visitors praying for healing from illness. The serene grounds nestled in the mountains provide a healing space that allows visitors to forget the hustle and bustle of the city.
