History
Hakozaki Miya is a venerable shrine that enshrines the Hachiman Great Deity, famous as the god of 'subjugating enemy nations.' It was founded by imperial decree of Emperor Daigo in the first year of Encho (923) during the Heian period. During the Mongol invasions, there is a tradition that it caused divine wind to protect Japan, and it gathered profound faith from samurai as a god of victory. Even today, it is visited by many as the 'god of victory,' and is affectionately known as 'Hakozaki-san' especially among the people of Hakata.
