Hiyoshi Taisha

Shiga Sakamoto 5-1-1 Otsu

History

Hiyoshi Taisha is an ancient shrine nestled at the foot of Mount Hiei, affectionately known as Sanno-san. It is said to have originated from the enshrinement of Ōyamakui no Kami at this location, and was deeply revered by the imperial court as a guardian against evil from the northeast (the unlucky direction) of Heian-kyo. Particularly famous are the monkeys considered divine messengers. From the wordplay of "monkey departing" and "monkey surpassing," they are worshipped as deities of warding off evil and luck in battle. The precinct is graced with beautiful gate towers and main halls that soothe visitors' hearts throughout the seasons. It also plays an important role as the guardian deity of Mount Hiei's Enryaku-ji Temple.
