Kitano Tenmangu
Kyoto Kyoto Bakurocho, Kamigyo Ward
History
Kitano Tenmangu is the head shrine of all Tenman shrines nationwide, enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning. Michizane was an outstanding scholar and statesman of the Heian period, but became embroiled in political strife and was demoted to Dazaifu. Subsequently, strange occurrences plagued Kyoto, so this shrine was built to appease Michizane's wrath. The grounds contain approximately 1,500 plum trees beloved by Michizane, and beautiful plum blossom festivals are held in spring. Especially during exam season, numerous students and parents visit to pray for academic success.
