History
Sanjo Daijingu is enshrined on Funamimachi, looking up at Hakodate Mountain. As evidenced by the name "Daijingu," it is a shrine of high standing with deep connections to the Ise Grand Shrine. Situated on a high plateau overlooking Hakodate Harbor, it has been cherished as a deity watching over the port town of Hakodate. True to its name Funamimachi (literally "ship-viewing town"), it has long been revered by fishermen and sailors as a place to pray for the safety of ships crossing the sea. It is a special shrine where one can worship in tranquility alongside Hakodate's beautiful scenery.
