History

Kokubunji is one of the provincial temples established throughout the nation by imperial edict of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period, founded in this location. In ancient times, it flourished as a major temple complex with seven main buildings and served as the center of Buddhist culture in Iyo Province, gathering the faith of many people. Though it declined temporarily due to warfare during the Sengoku period and natural disasters, it was revived through the devoted faith of local people during the Edo period. Today it continues as a temple rooted in the community, welcoming many visitors with its efficacious blessings developed through its long history. It is also known as a pilgrimage site on the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Route, serving as spiritual support for pilgrims.
