History
Niiukawa Chukami Jinja is enshrined deep in the Yoshino mountains as a sacred site of the water deity. It has long been revered by the imperial court as the water deity for rain prayers and holds an important position as one of the three shrines comprising Niiukawa Jinja, along with the upper and lower shrines. Dragon deities and water gods are believed to dwell with the pure flowing stream, and during droughts, imperial messengers were sometimes dispatched to offer prayers.
