History
Oyamaumi Jinja is enshrined on Omishima in the Seto Inland Sea and serves as the head shrine of all Yamaumi Shrines and Mishima Shrines throughout Japan. Revered since ancient times as a god of mountains and the sea, it has been particularly venerated by military commanders. Many samurai, including Minamoto no Yoritomo and Ashikaga Takauji, made offerings of armor and weapons, and numerous national treasures and important cultural properties of armor are preserved there today. Also called the "General Protector Shrine of Japan," it remains a renowned shrine visited by many pilgrims as a strategic location for maritime traffic and a sacred place for those wishing for military fortune and longevity.
