History
Kokubunji is the twenty-ninth temple of the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage and also holds a long history as the Tosa Provincial Temple. It is one of the provincial temples established throughout the nation by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period, with prayers for the protection and security of the nation embedded within it. It is said that Kobo Daishi Kukai also practiced here, and the teachings of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism have been passed down through the ages. Despite undergoing various periods of prosperity and decline throughout its long history, it has been carefully preserved to this day as a center of faith in the region.
