Hoju-in

Tokyo Minato Ward Shiba Park 4-8-55

History

Hoju-in, nestled in a verdant corner of Shiba Park, is an ancient temple of the Shingon school. It is said to have been founded in the Heian period and continues to transmit the teachings of Kobo Daishi Kukai to the present day. In the Edo period, it prospered as a sub-temple of Zojo-ji, the temple where the Tokugawa family is enshrined, and many monks practiced their disciplines here. Stone Buddhist statues and old gravestones throughout the temple grounds quietly evoke a sense of history, and despite being in the heart of the city, it is enveloped in deep tranquility. Today, various Buddhist services and memorial rites continue to be performed as a source of spiritual support for the local community, and it is cherished as a place of peace.
