History
Honzumiyoshi Jinja enshrined in Higashi-Nada Ward, Kobe is an ancient shrine dedicated to the three deities of Sumiyoshi. Believed to have been invoked from the great Sumiyoshi Shrine of Settsu Province, it has long been revered as a deity of safe maritime passage and purification. The Sumiyoshi deity is also the deity of Japanese poetry, with many visitors praying for advancement in the arts and academic success. As a deity of purification rituals, there is deep faith in seeking purity of body and spirit, and it is not uncommon for people to visit when starting anew. Though located in an urban area, the quiet shrine grounds provide a sacred space that calms the heart.
