Doseiji
History
Doseiji is known for the famous tragic love story of "Anjin and Kiyohime." During the Heian period, the beautiful Kiyohime pursued the monk she loved, Anjin, and in the end transformed into a serpent, hiding inside the temple's bell and burning to death the Anjin concealed within. This passionate tale is passed down through generations. However, beyond this fearsome story, Doseiji is also a temple of great prestige. It is said to have been founded during the reign of Emperor Tenmu and houses numerous treasures including a National Treasure wooden standing figure of Senju Kannon and many important cultural properties. The temple is known nationwide through the Noh and Kabuki play "Doseiji" and is cherished as a sacred site of performing arts.
