History

Etchu Soja Jinja is enshrined in Imizu City. A soja is a special shrine where the deities of a country's principal shrines are gathered together and venerated. This system was established during the Heian period to alleviate the burden on provincial governors who had to make circuit visits to shrines throughout their provinces. Etchu Soja Jinja has served as the head shrine of the deities of Etchu Province. From ancient to medieval times, it occupied an important position as the political and religious center of Etchu Province. With many deities enshrined together, it is a venerable shrine that answers all manner of prayers.
