Igusa Hachimangu
History
Igusa Hachimangu is said to have been founded during the Kampyo era (889-898) in the late Heian period, making it a shrine with over a thousand years of history. It is also said that Minamoto no Yoritomo offered prayers for victory when conducting his campaign in Oshu, and the shrine has long been venerated as a deity of martial fortune. During the Edo period, it was cherished as the tutelary shrine of Igusa Village and became the spiritual heart of the Suginami Ward area. The grounds contain sacred trees with several hundred years of growth, preserving an atmosphere of sanctity rarely found within Tokyo. The annual grand festival features traditional portable shrine processions, serving as an important ceremony that deepens community bonds.
