Sumiyoshi Jinja
Tokyo Chuo Ward 1-1-14 Tsukuda
History
The Sumiyoshi Jinja on Tsukuda Island was founded by fishermen who migrated from Tsukuda Village in Osaka alongside Tokugawa Ieyasu, enshrining a branch spirit of the Sumiyoshi Taisha from their homeland. Established during the Keichō era (1596–1615), it has long been deeply venerated as the guardian deity of Edo-mae fishing. Situated on a small island at the mouth of the Sumida River, it developed as a focal point where fishermen prayed for maritime safety and abundant catches. Today, known as the birthplace of tsukudani, it remains a cherished space where tradition and innovation harmonize. Surrounded by high-rise buildings yet retaining strong Edo character, it is loved by many as a precious cultural sanctuary.
