History
Shinano Kokubunji is one of the national temples established throughout the country by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period. A precious ancient temple conveying the Buddhist culture of the Tenpyo era to the present day, it flourished as the center of Buddhism in Shinano Province. It is said that at its founding it boasted magnificent temple buildings, and was a sacred place where prayers for the protection of the nation were offered. Even today, precious cultural properties including a three-story pagoda remain, telling of the history and culture of Shinano. For over a thousand years in Ueda, it has continued to gather the faith of the people, truly earning its place as a representative temple of Shinshu.
