Fujishiro Jinja
Wakayama Kainan 466 Fujishiro
History
Fujishiro Jinja is one of the important station shrines along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, particularly revered as 'Fujishiro Station Shrine' since ancient times. From the Heian period onward, many members of the imperial family and nobility offered prayers for safe travels here while en route to Kumano. The wisteria flowers that inspired the shrine's name bloom beautifully in spring, soothing the hearts of visitors. This site is also known as the birthplace of the Suzuki surname and is a sacred place for all people bearing that name throughout Japan. Along the path to the three grand Kumano shrines, this shrine received divine protection as people visited at important life transitions, truly a 'shrine of the path.'
