Takashio Daishi

Takashio Daishi is formally known as a sacred site featuring stone statues, though it is affectionately called "Daishi-san" by many people. Beginning in the early Showa period, several hundred stone Buddhist statues were lined up along the mountainside in an absolutely awe-inspiring manner. Centered on faith in Kobo Daishi (Kukai), it was constructed as a pilgrimage site modeled after the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temples route. Each of the stone Buddha images was carefully erected by devoted local believers, with deep prayers imbued in each one. Pilgrims can purify their hearts while visiting the stone statues and offer prayers with various wishes, making it a special sacred place.
