Komun Jinja

Fukuoka Fukuoka Chuo Ward, Nishi Park 13-1

History

Komun Jinja is a shrine enshrined in the verdant grounds of Nishi Park. It was established during the Meiji period as a shrine dedicated to Kuroda Josui (Kanbe), the founding lord of Fukuoka Domain, and Kuroda Nagamasa, the first domain lord. It was built to honor the great achievements of both lords and to console their spirits. The shrine name "Komun" is derived from Kuroda Josui's posthumous Buddhist name "Ryukoin-den Shinkoku Jogun Daikoji." Nishi Park is also known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, and in spring it is crowded with visitors. As a sacred place connected to the Kuroda clan that continues to watch over the city of Fukuoka, it remains beloved by many people.
