Sumiyoshi Jinja

Nagasaki Sumiyoshi-machi 13-6 Nagasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture

History

Sumiyoshi Jinja in Nagasaki is an ancient shrine enshrining Sumiyoshi Okami, famed as the deity of safe voyage. Nagasaki prospered from ancient times as a gateway to the sea, and this shrine has been revered as the guardian deity of the sea watching over the port town of Nagasaki. Particularly during the Edo period's isolationist policy, Nagasaki served as Japan's only window to the outside world and played a vital role. Many sailors and merchants prayed for safe voyage and offered thanks for their safe return at this historic shrine. In exotic Nagasaki, faith in Japan's ancient deities continues to be passed down through the generations.
