Warei Jinja

Ehime Uwajima City Wareicho 1451

History

Warei Jinja is a historic shrine established in the early Edo period to enshrine Yamabe Seibei, a senior retainer of the Uwajima Domain. Though Seibei devoted himself to domain reforms, he met an untimely death caught in political conflicts, and this shrine was built to console his spirit. Initially feared as an avenging spirit, it eventually came to be deeply revered as a deity of industrial development and business prosperity. Particularly known as a god of commerce, it attracts visitors from throughout Shikoku and is affectionately called "Warei-san." The annual Warei Grand Festival held in July is famous as one of the largest summer festivals in western Japan, drawing large crowds.
