History
Chusonji is a renowned Tendai Buddhist temple founded by the Oshu Fujiwara clan in the late Heian period. It is said to have begun when the first Kiyohira made a vow to build a Pure Land in this place to comfort the spirits of all those who perished in the turmoil of warfare. Possessing numerous National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties including the Golden Hall, it is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the cultural heritage of Hiraizumi. The golden halls that gleam with the splendor telling of the prosperity of three generations of the Fujiwara are truly artistic works expressing the Pure Land in this world. As a sacred place infused with prayers for peace, it touches the hearts of many people.
