Shofukuji
Fukuoka Fukuoka 6-1 Gokusho-cho, Hakata Ward
History
Shofukuji was opened in 1195 (Kenku 6) by Zen Master Eisai as Japan's first full-scale Zen temple. As indicated by the plaque "Fusho's First Zen Cave," it holds extremely important significance as the sacred site of the origin of Zen Buddhism in Japan. It is also a commemorative place where Zen Master Eisai, after returning from Song China, spread the teachings of Zen together with tea culture. Developed with the support of Hakata merchants, it continues today as a training hall for Zen practice and is cherished by many people. Truly a treasure house of history that laid the foundations for Japanese spiritual culture.
