Hotosan Jinja

Saitama Chichibu District 1828 Nagatorо, Nagatorо Town

History

Hotosan Jinja is an ancient shrine originating from the miraculous efficacy of the mountain dog (wolf) spirit that guided Emperor Jinmu during his eastern campaign in this area. Known as the deity protecting against fire and theft, it uniquely has two shrines—one at the summit and one at the base of Hotosan Mountain. As one of the three Chichibu shrines, it has gathered local reverence and is particularly renowned for its miraculous power against fires, as its name derives from "Hiyadomeyama" (fire-stopping mountain) transformed into "Hotosan." The precincts, embraced by the beautiful natural surroundings of Nagatorо, are graced by seasonal flowers that soothe the hearts of pilgrims.
