History
Niiukawa Shimokami Jinja is enshrined by the clear stream in Shimoji Town, Yoshino District, serving as a sacred site of the water deity. Together with the upper and middle shrines, it forms the three shrines and has long played a central role in the imperial court's prayers for rain. The lower shrine, positioned downstream, held the important role of conveying the blessings of water to inhabited areas. The dragon deity is believed to dwell alongside the pure flowing water, and as the water deity essential to agriculture and daily life, it has been deeply cherished by local people. It remains a sacred space where the murmur of the stream purifies the heart.
