History
Akama Jingu is a shrine dedicated to Emperor Antoku, who entered the waters at the Battle of Dan-no-ura. The beautiful vermillion-lacquered Suiten Gate facing the Kanmon Strait stands with majesty reminiscent of the Dragon Palace itself. Famous as the setting of the Tale of the Heike, it was established to console the spirits of Emperor Antoku and the Taira clan. Every May, the Senno Festival is held, and magnificent processions commemorating the glory of the Taira clan can be seen. It is a renowned shrine representative of Shimonoseki, filled with history and romance.
