Oyama Jinja

Ishikawa Kanazawa 11-1 Oyama-cho, Kanazawa

History

Oyama Jinja is a representative shrine of Kanazawa dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the founder of the Kaga clan, and his principal wife Matsu no Kata. Founded in 1868, it is a relatively new shrine, but its distinctive gate is renowned throughout Japan as a beautiful structure incorporating three architectural styles: Japanese, Chinese, and Western. Toshiie was not only celebrated as a military commander during the Sengoku period but also revered as a wise ruler who laid the foundation for the Kaga domain of one million koku. Matsu no Kata is known as a virtuous consort and symbolizes marital harmony. As a shrine that has walked alongside Kanazawa's development, it continues to receive visitors from not only the local community but from all over the nation, standing as a true symbol of Kanazawa itself.
