Kishu Toshogu

Kishu Toshogu enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu and was founded in 1621 (Genwa 7) by Tokugawa Yorinobu, the first daimyo of Kishu Domain. Known as the Kanto's Nikko, the magnificent gongen-style shrine buildings are beautifully decorated. Situated on a high plateau overlooking Wakaura, visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty that Ieyasu himself is said to have loved. During the Edo period, it received the reverence of the Kishu clan, and the solemn shrine buildings accessed by 108 stone steps represent a precious cultural heritage where Tokugawa authority and Kishu culture merge. This is a sacred site dedicated to Ieyasu's wish for 'heavenly peace and prosperity,' where prayers for peace and prosperity continue to be offered.
