Niukanshofu Jinja
Wakayama Jisoin 835 Koyasan, Kudoyama, Itu District
History
Niukanshofu Jinja is known alongside Jisoin Temple in Kudoyama as an important sacred site on the Koya Pilgrimage Route. Enshrining Niutsuhi Hime no Okami and Kouyamyojin, it is an ancient shrine with deep connections to Kobo Daishi Kukai. The name "Kanshofu" derives from official documents issued by the imperial court, speaking to the high rank of this shrine. Also a component asset of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range," it has been visited by countless pilgrims as a major route to Mount Koya. A precious sacred site narrating the history of syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism, visiting this shrine brings profound spiritual fulfillment.
