History

Tsukudo Hachiman Jinja is an ancient shrine located in Tsukudo Hachiman-cho, Shinjuku Ward, with ties to the father and son, Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and Minamoto no Yoshiie. It is said to have been founded during the Later Heian period when Minamoto no Yoriyoshi enshrined the deity from Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine during his campaigns in Ōshū. During the Edo period, it was cherished as the tutelary shrine of Tsukudo-cho and remains one of the historic shrines within Shinjuku Ward.
