Maeyama-ji

Nagano Maeyama 300 Ueda

History

Maeyama-ji is an ancient Shingon Buddhist temple said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai in the early Heian period. Located at the foot of Maeyama in Ueda, it is revered as a spiritual site known as the "Koyasan of Shinshū," where many practitioners have come to train. Particularly famous is the three-tiered pagoda called the "Unfinished Tower." Built during the Muromachi period, this tower uniquely lacks a roof on its uppermost layer, and its distinctive appearance has drawn considerable attention from many people. As a spiritual site associated with Kobo Daishi and as a precious cultural property of architectural significance, it is counted among the leading temples representing Shinshū.
