Watatsumi Jinja
Nagasaki Nagasaki Tsushima, Toyotama-cho Nii
History
Watatsumi Jinja on Tsushima is a renowned ancient shrine dedicated to the sea deity. In mythological times, it enshrines Toyotama-hime no Mikoto, known from the tale of Umisachi and Yamasachi, and is enveloped in a mystical atmosphere reminiscent of the Dragon Palace itself. Situated on Tsushima, the island at the nation's border, this shrine has served as the guardian deity of an important site of continental exchange since ancient times. The beauty of its torii gate standing in the sea is exceptional—during low tide, one can walk near it, while at high tide it presents a fantastical sight floating upon the water. It is a special sacred place where one can feel the mystery of the sea and ancient romance.
