History
Matsugasaki Jinja is a shrine deeply beloved by the people of Yonezawa as a shrine with ties to the Uesugi clan. It enshrines successive lords of the Uesugi family, renowned as exemplary rulers such as Uesugi Kenshin and Uesugi Takayama. Located on the site of the former inner citadel of Yonezawa Castle, it is a precious place that preserves the vestiges of the castle that once stood there. Uesugi Takayama in particular is known as an accomplished ruler who achieved domain reforms through the spirit of "if you will it, you can do it," and is famous for benefits in academic achievement and success in life. It is also cherished as a renowned cherry blossom viewing spot, with beautiful crowds of visitors in spring.
