Fukutawa Fudō-dō

Tokyo Tokyo Koto Ward, Tomioka 1-17-13

History

Fukutawa Fudō-dō in Tomioka, Koto Ward, is a Shingon Buddhist sanctuary established during the Edo period as an Edo branch office of Naritasan Shinshōji Temple. As faith in Narita's Fudō-myōō spread among Edo's common people, it was opened to serve those who could not travel the long distance to Narita. The temple is renowned for the Fukutawa Festival, one of Edo's three great festivals, where spirited bearers parade with rousing shouts of "Wasshoi!" Under the divine protection of Fudō-myōō, pilgrims continuously seek its blessings for warding off misfortune and business prosperity, and alongside Fukutawa's charming old-town streets, it remains beloved by many to this day.
