Uneme Jinja

Nara Nara Tarui-cho Nara

History

A small shrine standing beside Sarusawa Pond, Uneme Jinja harbors a bittersweet and beautiful tale of love. It is known for the tragic story of a court lady of the Nara period who pined for the Emperor and cast herself into Sarusawa Pond. Every year at the autumn moon festival, Uneme Festival is held, remembering this beautiful yet sorrowful tale. Though small, this shrine is cherished as a place understanding sincere love and providing support to women's hearts. I myself sometimes visit on moonlit nights to reflect upon the spirit of the court lady.
