Maki Daido

Maki Daido is an ancient temple in Tashio Maki, Bungo-Taketa City, renowned for its valuable collection of Buddhist statues from the late Heian period. It is one of the most important temples in the Rokugo Manzan Buddhist culture of the Kunisaki Peninsula, with numerous excellent Buddhist statues from the Heian through Kamakura periods enshrined within. In particular, the collection of Buddhist statues designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, such as the Amida Nyorai Seated Image and the Dainichi Nyorai Seated Image, are magnificent works gathering the finest Buddhist art of that era. In this great hall nestled in the quiet mountains of Maki, the Buddhist deities watch over pilgrims warmly across a thousand years of time. This place is truly a treasure of the Kunisaki Peninsula where history and art converge.
