Hinokihara Jinja

Nara Miwayama 1422 Sakurai

History

Hinokihara Jinja is a sessha (auxiliary shrine) of Omwa Jinja in Miwayama, Sakurai, known as the 'Original Ise.' During the reign of the 10th Emperor Sujin, Amaterasu Oomikami was said to have been first moved from the imperial court to this site, and is regarded as the origin of Ise Grand Shrine. Positioned on the slopes of Mount Miwa, it preserves ancient ritual forms with no main hall, treating Mount Miwa itself as the sacred body. The panoramic view of the Yamato Plain from the torii gate is the same sacred landscape that ancient peoples would have beheld. It is truly a special place where one can feel the origins of Japanese Shinto.
