Jison-in
Wakayama Ito District Kudoyama
History
Jison-in is known as the temple where Kukai's mother, Tamayori-gozen, spent her final years and serves as the head temple of Nyonin Koya, the women's counterpart to Koyasan. During the era when women were prohibited from entering Koyasan, women would visit this place to remember their son Kukai and pay reverence toward Koyasan from afar. Beloved as "Nyonin Koya," it attracts many pilgrims seeking children, safe childbirth, and women's happiness. The grounds contain numerous historical sites that tell of the deep bond between Kukai and his mother, and this sacred place teaches us the noble nature of parent-child love.
